Gordon B. Hinckley said, "My plea is that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life, we accentuate the positive." This year we hope to focus more on the positive blessings in our life. Hopefully, this blog is a source of optimism for us now and in the future.

Hawaii-- Day 4

Wednesday was our final full day in Hawaii. It was also the day that Jonathon needed to do the majority of his work recruiting at the Pacific Career Fair. He stayed at a booth at BYU-Hawaii from about 9-2 answering questions about the BYU graduate program. He felt really good about how many people he was able to speak with and hopes that some of them will apply for the program.

While Jonathon was working, we had some time to relax and do things close to the hotel. Hyrum and I attended the ukulele and hula lessons offered at the hotel. It was really fun to learn a little bit and immerse ourselves a little more in the culture. I love that Hyrum is so willing to try anything. That is such a fun quality. After our lessons, we met up with one of the missionaries serving in Hawaii from our ward.  We delivered a little gift from her family.

Then we took a walk to check out the BYU-Hawaii campus. It was only about a half mile away, so it was easy to get to. The entrance to the school is surrounded by all the flags that are represented by students at the university. It is so fun to see the diverse cultures there. On the way home, we got lunch and ate it out by the pool.

When Jonathon got home, we headed over to the Laie, Hawaii Visitor's Center. We watched a couple of videos about the history of the Church in Hawaii. I was so impressed with the faith of the Saints in Laie. From very early on in the Church's history, there was a large number of faithful Polynesian Saints. They worked very hard to build up the Church and save enough money to build a chapel and then a temple. Laie became the center of the Church for that area of the Pacific and the founding of BYU-Hawaii represented a huge step toward helping students all over the islands gain an education, while also remaining close to the gospel. It really showed us that God has an inspired plan to help his children in all parts of the world.

The Laie temple is absolutely beautiful. It was not open to go in and serve, but we walked around the grounds and took pictures there. I am so glad that we got to incorporate the temple into our trip so that our boys understand what is truly important in this world.

After the temple, we went back to the beach to take a few quick pictures, grabbed some delicious shrimp at Fumi's for dinner, and then finally got shaved ice for the boys. They had been waiting all trip for a shaved ice, and it did NOT disappoint. We stopped at Angel's Shaved ice. When we walked in, they asked what size we wanted. the small was enormous, and the large literally looked like an ice cream bucket. We could not believe how enormous they were. We definitely got smalls. Each person got to choose 3 flavors, and then they put sweet and condensed milk and whipped cream on top. They boys were in love. The shaved ice was bigger than their heads and delicious! It may have been the highlight of the trip for them. Haha!

When we got back to the hotel, we went swimming at the hotel pool one last time before packing up our stuff for the return flight the next morning. We went to bed tired, but so happy for all the wonderful memories we made.

Our flights the next day were uneventful. The kids did their homework on the planes and in the airports. They were so responsible and helped me feel less guilty about pulling them out of school. We got home around 8:30 pm. We were all worn out from the trip and went to bed soon after to try to be ready for work and school the next day. What a glorious few days we were able to spend with our kids. We made many sweet memories that will last a lifetime.

Finishing up homework on the way home
