Gordon B. Hinckley said, "My plea is that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life, we accentuate the positive." This year we hope to focus more on the positive blessings in our life. Hopefully, this blog is a source of optimism for us now and in the future.

Two is Terrific

This sweet little boy continues to be the sunshine of our lives. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have him in our family. He makes the happy times brighter and the difficult times more manageable. He was born with such a happy, easy-going temperament and is still that way, even as a "dreaded" two-year old.

Anyone who knows Hyrum knows what a social little bug he is. He LOVES people and gets so excited to see anyone he knows. He makes everybody's day when he sees them, yells out their name in his excited little voice, and runs to them for a hug. He does this with Grandpas and Grandmas, his little cousins, everyone in our family, and even the boys' friends. He can sure make you feel special!

He just recently learned to jump, and he jumps everywhere he goes. He'll add a little hop in when he is running, he'll jump down the stairs, and he'll bounce up and down when he is really happy. There is something contagious about him that I wish I could bottle up and have whenever I am feeling down.

Hyrum is an excellent sleeper. He goes to bed so easily. When he is tired, he says, "Mom... tired." Then we get a bottle, go rock for a few minutes, and he goes to sleep on his own. He has been sleeping through the night for a long time, and he still takes a 2-3 hour nap every afternoon. It is heaven.

Right now, Hyrum is completely obsessed with Lightning McQueen and the movie "Cars" and "Cars 2." He would watch them every single day if I let him. He knows all of the characters, and loves to sing "Life is a Highway." His room is decorated in the Cars theme, and he even has a Cars blanket that Grandma C. made. Sometimes, he will just run up to me and randomly say, "Lightning McQueen, Ka-chow!" Our second copy of "Cars" is so scratched up that it won't work any more, so we are on to DVD number 3. Haha.

Hyrum's favorite foods are rice, noodles, bananas, yogurt, cheese, peaches, and ice cream. He is kind of picky eater like his brothers, which is frustrating. We now have three of them, so it must be something in our parenting.... Grrr! He is allergic to eggs and peanuts, so we have to be careful with what we have in the house. We have gotten rid of all peanuts, including peanut butter. The other kids had a really hard time with that at first, but they haven't even mentioned it lately, so we have all adjusted. Sweet Hyrum is learning that he can't eat some things. If we tell him he can't have it because it has eggs in it, 9 times out of 10, he will drop the issue and move on to something else. That has been so nice.

He has been doing great at going to nursery lately. He started going really well shortly before we moved, I was afraid that going to a different church would cause him to regress, but thankfully, he has the sweetest nursery leader that he just loves. He is still a challenge in Sacrament meeting, but I guess that is to be expected.

His language is really coming along. He occasionally uses some full sentences, but mostly 2-3 word phrases. The best thing is that he speaks fairly clearly, so he is pretty easy to understand. At his 2 year old check-up, the doctor was surprised at how well he speaks. He said that most boys his age aren't understandable and don't have nearly as many words in their vocabulary. Yay, Hyrum! Some of my favorite phrases are:

-"ChristianAndrew" (pronounced: IstianAnjoo)- It makes sense that he runs them together because he is always talking about his brothers.
-"Water, Ice" (pronounced: water, Ish)- Our new house has an ice maker in the fridge (the boys favorite thing about the new house, hehe), so everyone always has water with ice.
-"Christian, Bus" (pronounced: Istian Bush)- He loves picking up Christian from the bus after school.
-"Night night. Love you!" (pronounced: Night Night. Love oo!)- When it is bedtime, he walks around and says this to everyone. It is the cutest thing ever.

Besides words, he also loves to sing and hum. When he wakes up in a really good mood, we will hear him humming the Harry Potter theme song from his crib. Harry Potter is his favorite, but we will also hear Ode to Joy on occasion. It sure makes waking up a more pleasant experience when you hear that coming from his room. Hyrum is also so expressive with his words, face, and body language. Here are a few of the outtakes from our recent photo shoot. They perfectly show his wide range of expressions.

For his birthday, Hyrum got (among other things) a new tractor with farm animals, a Letter Factory learning game, and an Elmo bath sponge. He was pretty thrilled!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Boy! We love you more than words.
